The former US vice-presidential candidate hailed Baroness Thatcher as a guardian of free economic markets and said she was an inspiration to today’s political leaders.

Mrs Palin, a former governor of Alaska, who is expected by some commentators to run for US president in 2012, posted a message on her Facebook page titled “Lessons We Can Learn from the Iron Lady”.

Wishing her a “very happy birthday”, Mrs Palin cited a well-known quotation in which Baroness Thatcher said that to lead a country like Britain “you have to have a touch of iron about you”.

The message was endorsed by hundreds of the 2.3 million people who follow updates to the Republican politician’s Facebook page.
